The company Porsche have become in the early 21st century, manufacturing SUV’s, sports cars and the Panamera super saloon, is very different to the position they found themselves in the early nineteen-nineties.
Porsche struggled through the recession of the early-nineties. The company was fiercely proud of it’s independence (and keen maintain it). In 1995 production ended of the 928 GT and the 968 was reaching the end of it’s development life.
Porsche were faced with the problem of potentially manufacturing only one model, the 911, which although popular with fans, was expensive to produce and based on a design more than 30 years old.
The Porsche Boxster 986 was Porsche’s answer to this predicament, a new entry-level, and profitable, Porsche.
