Originally powered by a tiny 2-stroke 49cc DKW Zweirad Union engine, that put out 4.5HP, enough to propel the tiny P50 to a (limited) top speed of 40mph. The unit originated from a scooter and drives through a scooter gearbox with 3 forward ratios and no reverse gear.
The Peel P50 started as the brainchild of inventor Cyril Cannel, who envisioned a tiny shopping car that could carry one person and their briefcase. These quirky bubble cars were made in tiny numbers on the Isle of Mann in the nineteen sixties but have found new fame in the 21st century through Television and the media. They have recently been re-launched in limited numbers for the enjoyment of a whole new generation.
The car in the video is the first electric Peel P50 in the cars 50 year history and is available to buy from Peel Engineering. They also make a 50cc petrol version of the car.
Another claim to fame is this electric version is the first P50 to be fitted and available with a reverse gear in 52 years!.
Fun fact – the original Peel P50 weighed just 59kg, it was light enough to lift using a carrying handle and park by hand.
