Porsche Gmund coupe drive and photoshoot video
Porsche released this fantastic video of a photoshoot and drive of a beautiful 1949 Porsche Gmund Coupe.
In the video, Jeff Zwart offers a real life perspective of driving this car in the modern world and why the Gmünd coupe truly represents the beginnings of Porsche.
These first 52 Porsches were hand-built at the tiny Gumnd saw mill. Their aluminium bodywork was hammered out over wooden bucks. These Gmund cars, as they are known, are recognised as an important part of the history of Porsche, representing Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s first clear statement to build personal sports cars.
Between 1944 and 1950, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, lived and worked in Gmünd, Austria. It was here that the first cars to bear the Porsche name, were built – the legendary Porsche 356. In total 52 cars were built (44 coupes and 8 convertibles) by 200 employees in the Gmünd works. In 1950 Porsche relocated to Zuffenhausen, a suburb of Stuttgart, where the company manufactures sports car engines to this day.
Since 1982 there has been a small, privately-owned museum in Gmund. The Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer displays Gmund-period Porsches and cars from Porsche’s rich motorsport history.
