Porsche’s 911 casts a long and distinguished shadow that more humble Porsche’s have the unenviable task of living in the shade of.

With the Boxster 986, Porsche engineered the car with more than enough ability to shoulder this responsibility.  While sports car ownership often involves making willing sacrifices, the Boxster inflicts very few quirks on its driver.  Sit comfortably in the beautifully built cabin, fire up the flat six engine, put the roof down if it’s a sunny day (the hood won’t leak if it isn’t) and revel in the sheer poise in which this mid-engined Porsche tackles corners.

First available in the UK first as a 2.5 litre in 1997.  The 2.5 engine grew to 2.7 litres in 1999 when a more powerful, 3.2 litre Boxster S was also introduced.

The Boxster 986 enjoyed the best sales of any Porsche model until the Cayenne arrived in 2003.  So, in it’s own way, the car has played a part in keeping the 911’s distinguished shadow growing ever-longer into the 21st century.
