McLaren Automotive has revealed performance figures and pricing of its new 650S super car, ahead of the launch at the Geneva International Motor Show next week.
The 650S badge refers to the cars power output – 650PS (641 bhp) from the British-built twin turbo V8 engine. The unit, pushes McLaren’s newest model from 0-62mph in just 3.0 seconds and on to 124mph in just 8.4 seconds. The standing quarter mile takes 10.5 seconds, and top speed is 207 mph (333 km/h).
This puts the McLaren 650s a full second quicker than the legendary McLaren F1 road car to 125mph, and more than half a second quicker than it’s sister, the 12C (itself no slouch!), which continues in production.
Despite the performance figures, the 650S is no stripped out road racer. The cabin is trimmed in Alcantara and there’s IRIS satellite navigation with Bluetooth, DAB digital radio (SIRIUS satellite radio in North America), wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control all fitted as standard. Customers can also specify fixed-back carbon racing seats, based on the lightweight design found in the McLaren P1™, electric steering column adjustment, rear parking cameras and added carbon fibre interior.
Optimised aerodynamics ensure that the performance of the McLaren 650S is accessible to drivers without a Formula1 super license. Although the 650S is based on the McLaren 12C, the design is inspired by the McLaren P1™. McLaren claim the new integrated front splitter contributes to increased downforce, giving a greater level of steering feeling and confidence to the driver, while also making the car more agile and balanced when handling. Door blades behind the front wheels direct air from the trailing edges of the front splitter, further improving front-end grip and balance. Carbon ceramic brakes sit behind unique ‘650’ lightweight alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres,
Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive explains: ‘Everything we’ve learnt from the 12C and the McLaren P1™ has gone into this car, creating a car with the widest breadth of capabilities of any production supercar’.
Pricing for the McLaren 650S Coupe starts at £195,250, with the 650S Spider starting at £215,250. The cars make their global debuts on Tuesday, 4th March 2014 at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show.
