As part of carphile.co.uk’s Owners View series, an Alfa Romeo Spider owner tells us what appealed to him about his classic Italian S4 Sports car.  What it’s like to drive and what is great about owning these classic Alfa Romeos.

“The looks are timeless and driving an Alfa Romeo Spider does put a smile on your face and I love driving it, wherever I go in it…”

Origins of the Alfa Romeo Series 4

The original Alfa Romeo Spider (Duetto) was released in 1966, the last car to be designed by the legendary Battista Pininfarina, immortalised in the closing scenes of the Dustin Hoffman film The Graduate. The Spider S4 was released in 1990, nearly a quarter of a century after the original car was launched and was the final fling for the original Duetto.

Under the bonnet of this S4 sits Alfa’s 2.0 litre 4 cylinder twin cam engine, fitted for the first time with Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection. With 127bhp on tap, enough to propel the 1,110kg car from 0-60 in 9.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 118mph. Driven through the rear wheels through either a 5 speed manual or (for the first time) a 3 speed automatic transmission.

Alfa Romeo Spider S4 production ended in 1993 to be replaced by the All new (front wheel drive) Spider in 1995. The Spider S4 was the last rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo until the 8c Competizione of 2007.
